I’m an urban dweller. “Urban” being defined as living close enough to the “big city” to walk to major necessities; coffee shop, diner, grocery store, etc...As a regular walker/cool mom, what I sport on my feet is extremely important. I have recently made a conscious decision to not over-wear my Uggs in public as I feel like big foot in house slippers. So, in lieu of wearing my usual boots, I’ve decided that my winter staple shoe must be flat, fun and fairly easy to maneuver my stroller in.
You’ve heard of “Mom Jeans,” well, I’m coining “Mom Shoes.” As a mom I can fairly declare that “Mom Shoes” are traditionally sneakers, Uggs, flip-flops, Toms or anything easy to remove/slip on. I’m not going to speak negatively of said “Mom Shoes,” but I've been feeling the need to find a shoe with more soul;-)
After several nights of internet shopping and googling “cool moms,” I made a ground-breaking discoveryof a little shoe called Vans! I declare Vans as the new “Mom Shoe.”
I chose a high-top style for ankle protection from Denver’s brisk winters. (That’s a joke, our winters are sunny and usually precipitation-free in my said urban hood) My style of Vans have a waxed fabric that from far away looks like leather. When the laces are tied just right, the Sk8-hi's are easy to slip on and off. AND as an extra bonus, these kicks have zippers up the back for an added “cool-mom” effect.
I think it’s important to have predetermined, every-day basics in your wardrobe that make you feel put together. If you choose that one pair of shoes or jeans/pants as the leading role in your closet at the dawn of each season, you can eliminate at least some of the over-thinking-stress of dressing. For someone like me whose priority is to merely look not-in-shambles, having those Vans sitting at the front door each time I go out insures that I don’t look prosaic (despite my everyday black yoga pants).
