It took me approximately 4 months, 4 days and 14 hours, to finally get it through my thick scull, that as a budding mother, I am not fat. I am not fat. I am not fat. Hey, voice inside my head, I AM NOT fat.
Here's the deal, I was slightly overweight during my formative years, and to this day my shrink says I have a "fat" head. Not "fat" as in, you can't wear fitted caps or ever go bald. "Fat" head is a metaphor, as in, my mind will always see that chubby girl in those horrible overalls... So, now that you've gained elite access into the inner working of psyche, shall we proceed on a lighter note? Let's!
Where was I? Oh yeah, I'm not fat. (Not there's anything wrong with that) When my size began to change, my style options did as well. And thus, I am faced with a cruel retail world of numbers and charts that made me feel...well, confused!
Here's a fun fact, when you buy maternity clothes, you are supposed to buy them at your pre-pregnancy size! Yeah! So ignore your new knockers that are now three times larger, and how last summer could maybe get an XS top at the Gap...IGNORE IT, and go on ahead buy that empire cotton T is an XS! (If you have not yet caught my sarcasm, let me be clear that the above statement is one based on truths that I have converted into a sarcastic, disbelieving remark).
I'm getting to a point, I swear, give me 175 more characters to make it!
I am not fat, but I am NOT a small in Maternity clothes either. AND I must go up in sizing (details for another post) in order to wear NM clothes. (NM = Non-Maternity).
Not rocket science, I know I'm not telling you anything you probably couldn't have guessed, but my point is this, I am now given a rare opportunity to get creative with how I buy clothes and to truly understand how to fit ALL types pieces on my new body.
The takeaway for any gal, knocked up or not, is that we need to try things on! Ignore the numbers and charts on websites and on clothing tags, and get familiar with how good it feels to wear something that fits no matter what the label says! (Sigh) Amen.
