I have found that my personal style experiences are truly moving me as of late. These fashion flashes are moments that I have to myself, but ones I feel could help other stylista’s who I KNOW are having a similarly perplexing closet pause.
My current issue; what is the ideal holiday celebration ensemble? Weddings, parties, birthdays, New Years Eve…I am lucky to have all aforementioned occasions to style, but I kept coming up with style-block.
For me the obstacle is too many options! I did my pre-requisite Fall/Winter shop, stocking my wardrobe with classic and trendy essentials for the season, and now I wonder, what is the prefect combination?
For many, this complexity of getting dressed for such occasions can be fear of over-trending (sparkles are not always easy to pull off), or body issues from inevitable ‘tis-the-season-munching…whatever it is, I think we could all use some tips for keeping our style festive.
I struggle as an early 30-something to take my holiday/party attire from my 20’s, bold-gimmicky, to current classic. I just can’t pull off cobalt blue ruffles anymore!
As I’ve pondered this conundrum and meticulously laid out my outfits for the next two months, I thought I ‘d share my findings.
- When in doubt, wear black! A monochromatic look paired with a bold piece of silver or gold jewelry, is not only flattering but an instant classic.
- Sparkles make you sparkle! Whether it’s a dress or an accent piece, if you are having a case of the seasonal blues, add sparkle to your evening look.
- Holiday parties for work, think elegant not flashy. With the booze flowing and the potential for inappropriate behavior, best to keep your outfit bold but simple. (Think DVF wrap dress, bold tights, a great heel or bootie and a bold necklace).
- Holiday weddings are the best! And I’m not just saying that because I was a near Thanksgiving bride. Any wedding you attend between now and New Years, I encourage you to get familiar with jewel toned dresses. I love the bold statement with a subdued undertone of black/gray. *Wedding tip: honor the attire requested, black tie=long gown/dress.
- It’s New Years Eve and baby it’s cold outside! Even if you are attending a house party, chances are you are going to end up outside for travel or fireworks! Instead of torturing your legs, try something new and bold, like a leather legging! Pair a sparkle sweater with a riding legging or a long silk top over a full-leather pant. I love the contrast of bad-ass meets diva!
Finally, when in doubt, consult your favorite style e-commerce site (mine is NET-A-PORTER) click on an item similar to one you have in your closet and pay attention to how they are styling it! It's like a free stylist at your darkly manicured finger tips!
